How to Get Started with Rune Stones (A Guide) By: James

A while back we got some really beautiful rune stones in our shop.

So, last week I took a bag and started doing some very basic spreads.

Now, I have to admit that divination with runes has never been my one of my strong suits. I have always been more of a tarot cards guy myself…

…but, this has TOTALLY changed my mind about how I feel about rune stones!

So, if you too feel a little intimidated by rune stones, I want to help you out.

And it’s actually very easy to cast with runes and I have A VERY SIMPLE spread for you that you can start to use right away…

It’s gonna be a little tricky to explain this, but I’ll try to do my very best.

The 5 Stone Rune Casting Method

Before doing anything else, you ask a question. Not just a yes or no question, but something a little more… uhm… tricky…

For example: “What will happen in the next 1-3 months if I do so and so” or “how will my relationship with mr. X turn out if we do this and that”…

You need 5 stones (obviously) and you need to place them kinda in a cross. Like this:

You should pick the stones at random from your Rune Stones bag and place them on the table. For now, just place them all heads up, so you can see the runes (later, when you get better, you can play around with reversed runes as well).

THE ORDER IS SUPER IMPORTANT! So don’t just put them randomly.

Black Onyx Runes of Wisdom and Truth from the Moonlight Shop

Start with one stone in the middle and then one to the left, then one below etc. (just like the image above)

Stone #1 represents your current problem or your state of mind. If the stone is negative or if it doesn’t seem to make any sense, it’s probably because you are confused right now (e.g. you mind isn’t focused) or because you are VERY troubled… Either way, go lay down or meditate for 5 minutes and try again (with a NEW spread).

Now, stone #2 represents the past. What you have gone through and what have brought you to your current situation.

Stone #3 will tell you what you need to deal with. Sometimes it requires help from people or your gods. If it’s a negative stone, it represent an obstacle you need to overcome.

Rune stone #4 basically tells you about the stuff you just have to accept. Sometimes there’s things you cannot change. Deal with it! At least for now…

And finally, stone number #5  shows you what to expect when you have dealt with

Runes Prophesying and White Magic

In this section, we will mention some of the main things we use when ‘laying down’ runes. Of course, there is no single interpretation to the meanings. For better understanding of rune, we recommend the book from Ralph Blum.

Origin of the Runes

The original meaning of the word rune is “secret, or something hidden”. Some indications show that the early runes were not used so much for writing, but rather as magical signs, that means, they were used in magic and for divination (but there is no direct evidence of this). They were probably transformed from the Tarot and the Chinese Book of Changes and were used as the I Ching of the Vikings at that time. With the rune-masters, their wisdom died as well. Nothing was left except the sagas, the scattered fragments of runic history and the rune itself

The influence of the runes on their time was undeniable. Elliott writes that the tribal leaders and advisers of Anglo-Saxon England called their consultations, which they held in secret meetings, “Runes”. As Bishop Wulfila translated the Bible into fourth century Gothic, he used in Markus 4, 11 (“you are given the knowledge about the secret of the kingdom of God”) for the word runa “secret”.

From the beginning, the runes also had a ritual function, for divination and invocation of higher powers that could affect the lives and happiness of the tribe. The are of the rune masters touched every aspect of life, the most holy to the everyday, practical. There were runes and spells to influence the weather, the tides, the seed, love and health. Runes for fertility, and a curse for the abolition of a curse, for birth and death. Runes were carved on amulets, drinking cups and javelins, and carved on the lintel of the houses and at the bow of the Viking ships.

The rune masters and vikings wore striking clothes, which you could recognize easily. Adored, welcomed and feared at the same time, those shamans were familiar figures in tribal circles. There is evidence that a sizable number of runes experts were women. The detailed operation of a similar tradition is much older and is from the Roman historian Tacitus. In the year 98 AD, he reported on the customs of the Germanic tribes.

Although in later Anglo-Saxon period alphabets included up to thirty-three sign, the traditional Germanic Futhark script consisted of twenty-four runes. These were divided into three “families” of eight runes, it was said that the numbers three and eight, had special magical powers. The three groups (aettir) were named after the Nordic gods Frey, Hagal and Tyr.

ODIN
Odin is the chief god in the pantheon of Norse gods. His name is derived from the term for “wind” and “spirit”. Through his suffering, his self-sacrifice, Odin brought the runes to us. According to the legend, he hung for nine nights on the Yggdrasil tree, the world ash tree, wounded by his own sword and tormented by hunger, thirst and pain. He was alone and without any help, until he was near to death, then he he saw the runes and, with a last, mighty effort reached for them and got them.

Runes and their meaning

Rune 1 Mannaz

1. MANNAZ – The Self

Remain modest – that is the right of the oracle.  Be in the world, but not from the world.  Stay receptive to impulses, that come out of the divine in the inner and outer sphere.  Seek  to live the usual life in an unusual manner.

If you take the ‘itself’ rune and cut through it in the middle, you are going to receive the rune of joy and its reflection.  So there is a fine warning not to be careless. The acrobatically dancing energy of the balance is asked here to bring its higher itself.  Nothing in the excess – that was the second request that was to be read at the entrance to the delphish temple.  The first advice read:  Recognize you yourself!

Rune 2 Gebo

2. GEBO – a Partnership, a Gift

If this rune is pulled, that is a sign that unity, union or partnership is near.  But you are requested, not to throw yourself into this connection.  A true partnership can only consist of two independent, healthy beings, that preserve there own independence also in this union. This advice is important at all levels: in romantic relationships, in commercial things, simply in partnerships of every type.

Rune 3 Fehu

3. FEHU – Property, Food, Livestock

Fehu is the rune of fulfillment: ambition satisfied, salary received, fulfilled love. It also promises food, from the commonplace to the holy divine. This rune requires a deep exploration of the importance of profit in your life. Another aspect of Fehu is the conservation and preservation of what has already been won. Caution and vigilance are necessary, especially in happy times. Even if there is a reason for celebration,  don’t be distracted by reckless bliss.

Runic Magic and Divination

runes_table

Rune stones, (sometimes cards), are used as tools of divination – a way to predict one’s future. Rune Stones come in a set of 24 ancient alphabetic symbols. They can be made of different materials – wood or glass most common and attractive – and usually kept in a pouch or box. They usually come with a book of instructions defining the symbols.

Ideally ruins are cast on an East-West axis or facing the sun. A white cloth is laid down and used to determine the direction of the casting. From here the focus should lie with the pressing question. After casting the stones onto the cloth the ones which have fallen the right side up are read and depending upon whether the rune is reversed or not will have a bearing upon its meaning and the reading as a whole.

An alternative to casting the rune stones …

Pick a rune stone randomly for a day reading; you can also do what is known as a 3 rune spread. Some feel that the day rune is a good way to get an answer to a single question. The 3 Rune Spread is used for asking broader questions whereas the single rune can be drawn on a daily basis.

Meanings and interpretations of each rune stone are shown below. Continue reading “Runic Magic and Divination”

Thankfulness Magick

So, you don’t feel like getting out of bed today?  I understand because sometimes life can be hard, and we don’t want to face it, but it’s also important to realize that those of us who can get out of bed are very lucky indeed!  Don’t forget, or neglect to be thankful, because there are a lot of people out there who wish that they could get out of bed….but they can’t because they might have no legs.  Or maybe they have legs, but they can’t walk.

Ohhh, so you don’t want to go to work today?  Yes, I understand that also because you might have a job where people don’t appreciate you, or they treat you like shit – WHY? Well just because they can!  But still in all, try to remember that you are one of the lucky ones, because you have a job…….a job that my be paying your bills so that you and your family can have a safe place to live.  You can have a warm and comfortable place that keeps you out of the cold.  You have a home where you can go to bed at night, not having to worry about who might try and take your spot on your cardboard box whilst you try to get some sleep next to the garbage dumpster in the alleyway.

Just always try to look on the positive side of things, even though the situation might not be exactly how you want it to be, or even close to how you want it to be at that moment.  Also, remember, storms never last forever, and what you may be going through will also have an ending.

Find a white candle (or a candle that is your favorite color).  It can be a tapered candle, or even a small tealight.  Now take just a few minutes to sit with that candle between your hands as you ground yourself by growing your roots deep into the dark, rich, Mother Earth.  Imbue that candle by envisioning your love and power  – your intentions going into it.

Sometimes, when I do Candle Magick, I will dig my pointer finger- fingernail into it as I send my intentions into it.  For me, it seems the best way to get the MAGICK in there!!

So, decide on the way you wish to imbue your candle (holding it between your hands, the fingernail method or whatever else you feel comfortable with, as long as you are doing it with your power hand….the hand that you normally write with), and start saying either out loud or in your thoughts, that which you are thankful for.  Make the time to list, in detail, exactly the things, people, situations and abilities that make you feel thankful.  Go deep within yourself.  Take the time to do this Ritual with your whole heart. Feel the thankfulness exude from yourself into the candle.

Once you feel that you’ve taken enough time to do this, thank the HIGHER POWER that you believe in, secure the candle so that it won’t catch anything on fire or be disturbed.  If possible, use a wooden match and set the flame to the candle wick and watch the Magick of the candle spark to life.  Stay with your lit candle as long as you desire, but leave it to SAFELY burn out.

It is very good to do this Ritual as often as you can, as it will help you to truly see all that you have to be thankful for…and more.

I wish you and yours, Bright Magickal Blessings!
