Introduction to Familiar Spirits BY KELDEN

In today’s modern Witchcraft, Familiars are often times thought of as being animal companions or pets. When asked if they have a Familiar, many Witches will often refer to their cat, dog, or other animal. Usually these pets have a predisposition towards Witchcraft, whether they’re always showing up at ritual time or just can’t seem to keep out of the Witchy supply cabinet. Yet, this seems to be a more modern conceptualization and I find that it presents a rather incomplete picture of Familiars.

I believe that there are, in actuality, really two types of Familiars. The first, is that which I have just described, an actual material creature. The second type, and that which will be the focus of this article, is the Familiar Spirit. As the name suggests, this type does not take an actual physical body but instead appears in spectral form. The form which the spirit takes is typically that of an animal (such as a cat, toad, rat, or crow) but it may also take human form as they did for Witches Alice Kyteler and Bessie Dunlop. There are many interpretations or theories as to what the Familiar spirit is exactly and Emma Wilby notes that traditionally Familiar Spirits were variously thought of as being imps, demons, fairies, angels, or even the Devil himself.*

According to folklore, there are a number of ways a Witch could obtain a Familiar. Probably the most prevalent method was the Witch being gifted a Familiar, usually by the Devil and typically after undergoing an initiatory experience. Other cases include Witches inheriting their Familiar from another individual, such as a family member. Elizabeth Francis, a Witch from Chelmsford, supposedly received a Familiar named Sathan from her grandmother and she in turn passed onto another Witch named Agnes Waterhouse.* In fact, according to some stories, a Witch had to successfully pass her Familiar on before she could die in peace. If the Familiar could not be given away properly, they supposedly hid in hedgerows waiting for a passing Witch to hopefully adopt them.* Additionally, there are cases of Familiars appearing of their own accord, such as the case of Essex Witch Joan Prentice who claimed that she was simply preparing herself for bed when her Familiar spontaneously appeared.* Regardless of the specific method, it is typically the Familiar that finds the Witch, not the other way around. That being said, I do believe there are certain ways to be proactive if one wishes to find a Familiar to work with.

The first step is to consider why you want a Familiar, what type of qualities would you like them to have, and what type of relationship do you want with them. For example, do you want a Familiar to act as a mentor or do you want them to be a servant to do your bidding? Once you have a clear idea, put your intentions out there and let it be known what you’re specifically looking for. One suggestion would be to petition your deity and ask them for help. The next step would be to spend time out in nature, dreaming, or journeying to the Otherworld. Keep your senses open as these are places where you will likely have your first communication with a Familiar Spirit. Once you are approached by a Spirit and begin conversing, it’s important to inform them what exactly you’re looking for in terms

What is Magick & how is it possible to achieve success in your Magickal workings? By The Silver Sage Witch of NewFound-Life.com

I just want to share with all of my beloved subscribers and watchers, that August is a VERRRY  Magickal month for me because it’s the month I was lead to The Craft, 17 years ago.  2002 was the year that I finally found the courage within myself to realize that not only am I a person, I am a Magickal being, a believer of that which cannot be seen.  It was the first realization that, yes, I am a Witch, albeit a Broom closet Witch, but a witch none the less.

Thank you for sharing this moment with me!

After many years of being on my Spiralled Witchcraft Path, I’ve come to know that Magick (spelled with a K to distinguish it from stage magic….spelled without the K), is the art of manipulating the mind and the Energies that surround us.

It is co-creating with the Goddess, the Creator, the Universe, the God, or whomever you petition to or pray to for guidance and advice regarding the pro-active steps you need to take in order to reap the end results of that which you so desire.

Magick is finally finding the adaptitude within one’s self to decisively stand up and take back the power that you either unintentionally gave away, or that was stolen from you.

Magick is also: bringing a new life into this world, the changing of the four seasons, the way we breathe without even needing to think about it. Magick is Mother Nature! It’s watching the springtime buds and blooms turn into flourishing plants, leaves and flowers. It’s seeing a Bumblebee flying and collecting nectar when by proven scientific right, it shouldn’t even be possible!

Magick is making someone smile. It’s living, and not just existing.  Magick is anything that you, we take the time to actually and intentionally feel, see, and truly and gratefully experience with all that we are.

However, as you go along on your Spiriled Witchcraft Path, you will be responsible for finding out what Magick truly means to you, and not just using my definition, or someone else’s definition.

Ok, here’s how it’s possible to achieve success with MY five keys to successful Magick….the way I do it.

  1. Set your specific goal…your concrete desire….write it down!
  2. Emotion & Feeling   Feel what you desire, live it in your mind and attach emotion to it as well.
  3. Visualize your end goal or outcome or desire (vision board or a token of what you want).
  4. Be proactive and take the necessary steps to do your part to your utmost ability in the process of co-creating that which you so desire. By that I mean…..if possible, have a sacred space where you can set up your props such as candles, crystals, incense, drawings, or whatever you need to help you be able to meditate every day upon it or for those of you who don’t like the word meditation, we can say think intensely upon that which you desire. Then make sure you are physically doing something to attain your goal. If for a job…..applications.  You want to sing…..get on youtube or go to different places where they need singers…..same with acting or selling your art.  You want to win the lottery?  Then buy a damn ticket!  You MUST also do the mundane work.
  5. Don’t just believe that your goals and desires will come true. YOU MUST KNOW that your goals and desires WILL MANIFEST…in the right place, at the right time.
  6. Last but not least……remember back to when your mother always said to you that patience is a virtue……sorry but, she was right! BE PATIENT and BELIEVE it will happen for you!

Hey, you can do it….you got this!

A few students that I mentor in Witchcraft asked me, “What if I’m in another religion or have another type of Spiritual practice, can I still be a Witch and practice Magick?”

ANSWER:

Yep, you sure can!  It doesn’t matter what your religion or Spiritual Path is – EVERYONE can be a Witch…….EVERYONE can practice Magick.  It just depends on what you want and how you can or will accept your Witchyness, with regard to your present circumstances.

Thanks for reading and I wish you Bright Magickal Blessings.
