Castor Oil: Your Best Choice for Home Detox and More By Batool Merali

castor oil

Was your grandmother a fan of castor oil? Did she share its virtues for all that ailed you? In Ayurveda School, whenever we asked our teacher for advice on what to use for cramps, skin, constipation, hair, and more the answer was always “castor oil!” This became a joke among the students. Later, as I experimented on myself, I realized the value of this truly great oil- a home remedy wonder.

An Ancient Oil Made Modern

Castor Oil’s hand-shaped leaves and reputation for healing have given this ancient oil the nickname “Palm of Christ.” Cultures all over the world have used the oil- derived from the seed of the plant- for everything from skincare in the cosmetic industry to digestive care as a laxative. Edgar Cayce popularized the use of castor oil in the 1940’s and 50’s, especially in the form of castor oil packs. Today, many healthcare practitioners are rediscovering the benefits of using real, therapeutic quality castor oil in ayurveda practice and for holistic medicine. It is truly one of the earth’s most versatile healing gifts – both inexpensive and easy to use.

How it Works

Through the lens of Ayurveda and pharmacology, castor oil has a variety of ways that it helps heal. The chemical compounds in castor oil and its Ayurvedic qualities give it the following properties and effects:

Botanical Name: Ricinus Communis

Sanskrit Name: Eranda Tailam

Part Used: Seed

Rasa: Sweet, Pungent, Astringent

Virya: Cooling (externally), Heating (internally)

Vipaka: Sweet

The Top 5 Ways To Use Castor Oil for Home Care

Now that your curiosity is peaked- here are some of the ways I recommend castor oil be used at home.

  1.  Home Detoxification to Decrease Ama

Castor oil is often an essential part of an Ayurvedic home cleanse due to its incomparable purgative properties. This powerful laxative is used specifically to cleanse out the colon, and to flush out excess toxins and Pitta (heat) from the body. It is recommended to use only under the guidance of a knowledgeable health practitioner.

  1.  Skin Care

Castor oil has been used widely in the treatment of many skin disorders including psoriasis, eczema, severely dry skin, ulcers, bug bites, unwanted sun spots, sunburns and wrinkles. Combining castor oil with neem oil is effective for dandruff and dry itchy scalp. Mixing it with coconut or jojoba oil or your favorite mask is a perfect way to apply to skin.

  1.  Joint Pain

Castor oil – a powerful anti-inflammatory agent which can be taken internally or applied externally, also has a strong affinity for the joints. Ricinoleic acid, which is defined as the main fatty acid found in castor oil, has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that when castor oil is applied externally to joints, inflammation and pain can be reduced.

  1. Eyebrow, Eyelashes and Hair Thickener

For long beautiful lashes, thick eyebrows and luscious thick hair, apply a little castor oil to your eyebrows, lashes and hair. The proteins and fatty acids in castor oil

8 Makeup Hacks To Make Your Lips Look Bigger By HB Team

huda beauty

Let’s be real, there’s nothing sexier than a plump pout – just take a look at famous bombshells Angelina Jolie, Naomi Campbell, and Marilyn Monroe, they all have full AF lips. But just because we weren’t all blessed with a naturally voluptuous pout, doesn’t mean we can’t work our magic with makeup and a few quick DIYs to create the illusion of a fuller pout. You just need to know the right makeup tricks and hacks, and of course, we’re here to share all of them with you.

1. Prep your lips

The smoother, more hydrated your lips, the better your products will apply and look. Start by using an exfoliating scrub, and then follow with a hydrating lip balm. One of our fav hacks to exfoliate our lips is to use a toothbrush and sugar – all you need to do is wet the toothbrush slightly and dip it in sugar (we love coconut sugar), then brush your lips gently in circular motions. Wash off with warm water and follow with a hydrating lip balm, we like the Aquaphor Lip Repair + Protect, Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $6.

2. Conceal

Before your lip color, prime your lips with a concealer or foundation like the Huda Beauty #FauxFilter, to create a base layer. This will give your lipstick a more even finish and will allow the true color to show through, while also making it last longer. It’ll also act as a blank canvas if you want to overline your lips for added volume. You can even apply concealer around the edges of your lips after lipstick to neaten the lines and make your lips pop.

3. Contour your lips

Contouring is one of our all-time favorite makeup hacks, as you can easily manipulate the dimensions of any area of your body; so you could make your forehead look smaller, make your cheekbones pop, and of course, make your lips look bigger. By adding either a dusting of ashy colored contour or a creme contour underneath the center of your bottom lip and above the tops of your lips, you’ll create a subtle shadow – just make sure you blend, blend, blend! This added dimension will immediately make you lips look fuller.

4. Highlight your Cupid’s bow

huda khattan

Highlighter isn’t just for your cheekbones – if you add a little shimmer to your Cupid’s bow, it will open up your lips, making them look more voluptuous. We normally opt for a champagne-toned highlighter as it’s the most natural match; either apply it with your finger along the Cupid’s bow or use a soft fluffy brush. If you’re feeling extra, you can even add a little to the center of your lower lip to make it appear fuller.

5. Overline your lips

One of the easiest ways to make your lips look bigger is to overline your lips – makeup

Benefits Of Lavender Oil: 8 Uses For This Essential Oil

If you’re looking to calm both the body and the mind (and let’s face it—we could all benefit from a little R&R), look no further than the classic essential oil: lavender oil. While the pretty purple plant itself is a sight to see, its versatile essential oil is where the healing powers are at. From your head to your toes, lavender oil can help you de-stress, decompress, and develop your healthiest routines yet.

What exactly is lavender oil?

Lavender oil, also known by its scientific name Lavandula angustifolia, is a type of essential oil derived from—you guessed it—the lavender flower. Although it’s now grown globally, lavender is native to the Mediterranean, the Arabian Peninsula, and Russia.

The oil is extracted by a steam distillation process, in which the flowers are steamed, the steam is captured, and the oil is separated and collected from the water. You can usually find

Black Seed Oil Benefits

What is Black Seed Oil?

Black Seed Oil

Old Egyptian kings deemed it a gem. King Tut was even buried with a bottle of this oil, wishing that he’d take it along to the afterlife.

Despite its astounding reputation, some people might still inquire: what is black seed oil? It refers to the oil extracted from the seeds of Nigella Sativa Plant. Black seeds are also referred by a myriad of names such as:

Black Seed Oil to Treat Cancer

The benefits of black seed oil are simply inexhaustible. Several scientists in Croatia conducted tests to examine the anti-tumor properties of two phytochemicals, thymohydroquinone and thymoquinone, in rodents.

The tumor cells decreased by a whopping 52%! Black seed oil is quite rich in these two chemicals and was found to prevent as well as treat cancer via an assortment of mechanisms such as anti-metastasis, anti-proliferation, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction.

Black Seed Oil to Rejuvenates Unhealthy Liver

The liver is a crucial organ in the human body. It’s paramount that you keep it healthy and toxin-free by avoiding an overindulgence of alcohol and illegal drugs.

However, if you’ve experienced a deteriorating liver function due to issues such as disease, alcohol binging or medication, consuming black seed oil will help nurse your liver to full health. Black seed oil has some curative properties which include:

  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-coagulant
  • Anti-histamine
  • Anti-oxidant
  • Anti-fungal
  • Anti-viral

Therefore, make it a habit to take black seed oil as it helps prevent liver damage and disease.

Black Seed Oil helps in Weight Loss

Yet another awe-inspiring property of black seed oil. Weight loss is usually a hard nut to crack among some people, especially today when fast food is the rage.

However, the Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders Journal reviewed the composition of plants that helped in weight loss and listed black seed oil among the best natural anti-obesity plants in the world. Black seeds aid in keeping your blood glucose levels stable. They also aid in liver gluconeogenesis as well as the absorption of glucose in your intestines. Take advantage of these black seed oil weight loss properties that will transform your life.

Prevent Hair Loss with Black Seed Oil

One unique property of black seed oil is its exciting ability to restore your hair.

Scientists are still boggled by how this works, but one thing’s for sure: black seed oil has holistic curative and restorative properties. Perhaps the most outstanding traits of the nigella sativa plant that could help unravel its hair restorative powers are the strong antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds it contains. Black seed oil consolidates your hair follicles and strengthens your hair roots, helping to treat cases of dry or thinning hair. It also reverses premature graying of hair. Therefore, if you notice your hairline receding or your hair turning gray, trust black seed oil for hair restoration.
