How to Honor the Dead – Alma

By T Kira Madden

Here’s a secret: I wear my father’s clothes every day. Not entire outfits, but a garment or two, always. I wear his striped t-shirts to bed at night, his vibrant dress socks under my boots. I’ve tailored his button-up shirts to fit me in the shoulders; I’ve removed a link or two from his bracelets. Yes, I am ashamed to admit, I have even worn his underwear. But that was only once, and, well, I happen to wear Calvin Klein briefs, too. I wear his jade pinky ring on my ring finger, and his army tag necklace never comes off my neck.

I thumb the words: MADDEN, JOHN L, #11500138, JEWISH.

Why the hell does it say Jewish? I asked my mother when she gave me this tag.

Because they had to know how to honor the dead, she replied, in case he died.

My father has been dead for one year five months and 12 days, as I write this. It was his lungs, not the army. I don’t have to check the calendar, or count, because my body knows. Each day, I think, I am not doing grief right. I am wading too slowly through this, or, at moments, too quickly, or not at all. My grief is selfish, my grief is smaller than other griefs, it is unjustified, my time for sadness is up; everybody dies, so it’s absurd to feel this bad, that my situation is unlike all others. Spoiler alert: That is grief talking, and none of this is true.

Every single day since November 2, 2015, I have asked myself that same question: How do I best honor the dead?

Because that army tag was incorrect. My father didn’t want a religious ceremony

Help to find what you’ve lost, by The Silver Sage Witch of NewFound-Life.com

See the source image

Isn’t it frustrating when you loose something and you need to find it in a hurry?

I feel the same way and that’s why I’d like to share with you, that which I use to bring back something I’ve lost.

Say this phrase three times in a row:

Dear Angels I now call unto you,

I’ve lost ______________ and I now feel blue.

Bring back, I ask, this thing to me,

I thank you truly, so now mote it be!

Please try it, wait a few minutes, a few hours (perhaps one whole day), and then let me know if it worked for you.

I wish you happiness and excellent health,

Helping an Injured or Sick Hedgehog

Hedgehogs need our help

When you find an injured hedgehog, watch it first to see how badly hurt it is. Then seek immediate emergency treatment from a wildlife rehabilitator or local vet.

If you ever find a sick, injured or a hedgehog you are concerned about it needs to be protected and kept safe because *every minute matters.

If possible, try to wear suitable gloves to pick up the animal, then put them in a secure cardboard box with ventilation holes, lines with newspaper or a towel, if you can try to wrap them in a soft blanket (ideally use suitable gloves). Then ring for help by contacting a hedgehog or wildlife rescue centre or carer immediately. If you cannot get through take them to a local vet as soon as possible so they can give them emergency treatment.

Hedgehogs will often try crawling away, so keeping them protected in a well-ventilated box, even wrapped in a blanket will help. Try to take them indoors while you call for emergency help.

A good way to help them keep warm is to fill a hot water bottle up and cover it up completely with a towel, so it’s not hot and its gentle warmth for the box. Never allow the bottle to go cold, remove before it gets cold.

Put the box somewhere

Step 1: Supplies You’ll Need

Picture of Supplies You'll Need

Toenail clippers-There are two main kinds of clippers:scissor style and guillotine style. I prefer guillotine because I think they are easier to use and give a cleaner cut. No matter which style you choose, the sharper the clipper, the cleaner the cut and the faster the job gets done.

Styptic powder or pencil-Powder form is easier to use than to try and apply a pencil to your squirming dog’s foot.

Nail file-same kind you use on your own nails.

dog treats-commercial treats, string cheese, hot dog bits, whatever your dog
